About this driver
Realtek HD Audio is the most common audio driver on Windows PCs — installed on roughly 80% of laptops and desktops with onboard sound. The driver controls speakers, headphones, microphone, and line-in connections.
Common issues with Realtek HD Audio include: sound disappearing after Windows update, microphone not detected, distorted/crackling audio, and HDMI audio not switching. Most are fixed by reinstalling the latest driver.
Installation steps
Identify Your Realtek Version
Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers → Right-click Realtek High Definition Audio → Properties → Driver tab. Note the version number.
Download Latest Driver
Visit Realtek's official site and download the latest 'High Definition Audio Codecs' for your Windows version. The download is large (~260 MB) but includes all codecs.
Uninstall Old Driver First
In Device Manager, right-click Realtek device → Uninstall device → check 'Delete the driver software for this device' → Uninstall. Then restart.
Install New Driver
Run the downloaded installer. After installation, restart your PC. Test sound output from Settings → System → Sound.
